Born too soon
Of the 15 million children born prematurely each year, 1 million will die. The long-term impact on those who survive is devastating, with many facing severe complications. The physical and neurological disabilities caused as a direct result of preterm birth are life changing, and often lay undiagnosed for years.
Prematurity is still the most important cause of infant death and disability worldwide; despite medical advances, we simply don’t know enough. Our research is aimed at reducing the 60,000 babies born preterm in the UK alone, and finding preventative measures to help stop the 1million preterm babies that die globally.
Every child should have the chance of a full life that is unaffected by disability. Our vision is a world in which a child’s first day on earth would not have to be their hardest. Through our pioneering research, we can make that vision a reality.
